As the title suggests, Dead End, The School of Hard Knocks (2020-2023): 10 Chapters of Secret Journey is a multi-year project, being developed from 2020 through 2023. After the premiere of the work-in-progress production of three chapters at La MaMa in New York City in September 2020, the project continues to develop in New York, Japan, Berlin, Budapest and Venezuela.
The artists are committed to at least 3 of collaborative projects and will participate in workshops, rehearsals, developmental performance or presentations whenever appropriate.
A few key organizations will assist and support the project: Non Profit Organization, ROOT CULTURE, from Kamakura, an artist collective that has a long history of collaborating with Chuma and her artists.
La MaMa ETC in New York City will support the work with presentations of works in progress as well as through marketing and public relations campaigns.
This is a challenging work for the artists, presenters and the audience alike. We will work carefully with presenting venues to create comprehensive press releases and website texts reach to the members of the press and public.
We are also planning to do pre or post-performance artist talk, Q & A sessions or roundtables with the performers and audience for a candid exchange of the opinion. All main collaborators will be involved in the project evaluation, from an artistic point of view, and will be meeting periodically to discuss each step of the development of the project.
